David Prutton has suggested that Aitor Karanka's defensive qualities as a manager could make him a viable option to take over at Huddersfield Town.

The Terriers are searching for a new manager after sacking Jan Siewert on Friday night, in the aftermath of the club's 2-1 defeat to Fulham, with Huddersfield now 22nd in the early Championship standings, having taken just a single point from their first three Championship games of the season.

According to recent reports, Karanka is eager to talk to Huddersfield about their managerial vacancy, as he looks to get back into management.

The Spaniard has been out of work since asking for a termination of his contract at Nottingham Forest in January after just a year in charge at The City Ground, having previously guided Middlesbrough to Championship promotion during his time at the Riverside Stadium, and Prutton believes that this could be an interesting prospect for Huddersfield.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Football League World Chief Editor Sam Rourke, Prutton said: "I think it's a funny one with Aitor isn't it.

"I mean he did a good job with 'Boro, and he seemingly came away from Forest mutually and there was a lot of admiration between the two of them even though they parted company."

Discussing what Karanka in particular could bring to Huddersfield were he to take over at the club, the former Nottingham Forest and Leeds midfielder added:

"He's known for being defensively pragmatic which I think if you look at how they're defending at this moment in time Huddersfield they definitely need someone to come in and shore up the back.

"So possibly from that point of view, but out of those two, both very good managers (Karanka and Chris Hughton) and as good as they and as experienced as they are no one's a sure thing and there's always an element of risk with whoever you appoint."

Huddersfield are next in action away at Cardiff on Wednesday night, before hosting Reading at the John Smith's Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
