Sky pundit David Prutton has claimed that Stoke City boss Nathan Jones is the right man for the job “at this moment in time”.

The Potters have made a poor start to Jones first full season in charge and are currently bottom of the Championship with just one point from three games.

The 46-year-old coach took over at the Bet365 Stadium in January with the side 14th and was unable to turn their season around, leading them to a 16th-place finish.

The pressure is now mounting on Jones, who added 10 new players as he looked to shape the squad to his image in the summer.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World Chief Editor Sam Rourke, Prutton suggested that the Stoke boss was the right man to lead the club at this point.

He said: Having seen what he did with Luton and how good they were, I think he is a very good manager.

“It is just another level, another step up, another opportunity to prove himself. I think he is right (for the club) at this moment in time. I think time will tell.

“Having spoken to Gary Rowett, who was obviously on the inside not so long ago, he knows how tough a job it is and how when it isn’t going right every single person is staring at you looking for answers and that is what he’s got at this moment in time.”

He added: “I know that Jones will leave no stone unturned at trying to turn that club around.

“Intense is a word that is used to describe him. He loves his job, he devotes himself to his job it is quite obviously a vocational approach to what he does for a living and if you’re a fan you have got to respect him because he is feeling every loss as acutely as any Stoke fan at this moment in time.

“The flip side of that is you don’t want that to permeate into the playing squad.

“You don’t want them on edge or feeling that every single game is the most important, must-win, do or die because to be able to deal with that type of tension over the course of the season takes a special kind of mental set up which is exhausting.”

Stoke face a trip to 18th-place Preston North End this evening, which Prutton has predicted: “is going to be a very tough game”.
