After drawing their first two fixtures of the 2019/20 League One campaign, Sunderland have now seemingly clicked into gear.

Following an impressive 1-0 victory over Portsmouth last Saturday, the Black Cats survived a scare at Rochdale in midweek to secure another three points.

Yet whereas Charlie Wyke and Marc McNulty have both stepped up to the mark for Sunderland so far this season, fellow forward Will Grigg has failed to opened his account in the third-tier despite making four appearances.

Signed for a reported fee of £4m from Wigan Athletic earlier this year (via Sky Sports), the Northern Ireland international has struggled to live up to expectations at the Stadium of Light.

After experiencing an extremely disappointing second-half of the previous campaign which resulted in him score just five goals in 22 appearances, Grigg now looks a shadow of the player who found the back of the net on 25 occasions in League One for Wigan during the 2015/16 season.

Former Sunderland defender Danny Higginbotham has given his take on Grigg's current situation in an exclusive interview with Football League World.

Higginbotham believes that whilst the forward still possesses the quality needed to thrive in the third-tier, his recent woes may be down to an inability to adapt to Ross' system.

"When he first came in, everyone was saying that he was a fantastic signing due to what he did previously," Higginbotham told Football League World, in an exclusive interview with Chief Editor Sam Rourke.

"But for whatever reason, it has not happened for him yet. These things can happen.

"Sometimes certain players get better in certain systems and sometimes it takes a bit of time to bed in. It can be down to the way the team sets up.

"Yet there is no doubting Grigg's quality."

Grigg could be involved for Sunderland when they host AFC Wimbledon on Saturday.
