Sheffield Wednesday have recently confirmed that they have appointed Garry Monk as their new manager, who they hope will guide them to a promotion challenge this season.

Monk takes over from Lee Bullen who had been in interim charge of the Owls since Steve Bruce left the club to join Newcastle United earlier this year.

In an exclusive with Football League World's Chief Editor Sam Rourke, talkSPORT's Chris Iwelumo felt as though Monk has learnt from his previous experiences at both Leeds and Birmingham.

"I think it's a good move. I'll be honest, I think when Monk took the Birmingham job, it was like 'last chance saloon' for me and under difficult circumstances, he did really well.

"Obviously being deducted points as well, it put them into a mid-table position, which was disappointing when they were so close to the play-offs.

"He has shown what he is all about at Leeds, they fell short towards the end of the season, and that's something I felt he went away and looked at himself and has good staff behind him."

The former Scotland international labelled Sheffield Wednesday's appointment of Monk as 'the perfect match', and insisted that he didn't need to make many changes to the squad that is already in place this season.

"At Sheffield Wednesday, the pressure is there. They've been flirting with the play-offs for a couple of seasons now, and promotion is the target for 12-14 clubs in the Championship realistically so that's the target for them.

"He's inherited a good squad, with real depth in there, they've got some players there that can win you games that you might not deserve to.

"I just think Garry Monk's appointment could be the perfect match, but again it's about how quickly he embeds his style. You don't need to change too much there, as you've got some very good technical players, good leaders and good voices in that dressing room, so he just needs manage that."
