Mansfield Town winger CJ Hamilton is attracting interest from Sky Bet Championship side Barnsley, a source close to the East Midlands club has exclusively confirmed to Football League World.

The 24-year-old enjoyed a fine season last time out for the Stags, scoring 14 goals and producing six assists in all competitions and helping the club to within touching distance of the automatic promotion spots.

The pacey winger was a reported target for both West Brom and Aston Villa in January, however the latter are not expected to go back in for the attacker as they prepare for life in the Premier League.

After missing out on promotion to League One, Mansfield face a real battle on their hands to keep hold of Hamilton, and with only one year left on his current deal at the One Call Stadium, it remains to be seen whether the Stags cash in this summer, rather than let him leave for free next season.

Now, a source close to the Nottinghamshire club has exclusively confirmed to Football League World that Barnsley are considering a move for the former Sheffield United youngster.

Scouts from Oakwell were believed to be present in Mansfield's final few league games of the season, as well as in the play-off semi-final second leg where they lost on penalties to Newport County.

The Tykes are keen to strengthen their wide areas this summer, having already been linked with the £1.2million signing of Luke Thomas from Derby County.

Hamilton's arrival would certainly add a great deal of pace and power to their already impressive attack.

The Verdict

I think that Hamilton would be an excellent signing for Barnsley.

Mansfield will do all they can to keep hold of him, but with only one year left on his contract, they need to be careful.

We have seen James Norwood recently leave Tranmere for Ipswich on a free transfer, and Mansfield can't afford to lose out on some decent money for the winger.
