Derby County hope to announce that they have secured fresh investment at the club before the end of the year.

Owner Mel Morris has made it clear for the past few months that he is willing to listen to offers as he looks to attract more funds to help the club in their quest to reach the Premier League.

And, after what has been a frustrating period for the fans, there was finally a breakthrough tonight, with the Telegraph revealing that talks are at a very advanced stage.

The report claims that Morris has been in talks with a consortium and that they have progressed well, with an announcement expected within the next four weeks.

Whilst further details of that consortium aren't provided, they do state that the fresh finances will ensure that Rams boss Phillip Cocu will be given funds to strengthen the squad in January. Importantly, Morris will also remain as chairman.

Derby are currently languishing in the bottom half of the Championship and trail the play-off places by six points.

The verdict

This is the news that Derby fans have been waiting for and it's a very exciting time for the fans and they will be desperate to hear more about the consortium involved.

Of course, the best bit is that the report outlines the support they will give Cocu and the right additions in the New Year, along with Wayne Rooney, could make Derby a real force as the campaign progresses.

It's sure to be a very busy month or so for the club and it will be interesting to see how this plays out.
