West Bromwich Albion were top of the Championship when they made their final signing of the 2018 summer transfer window.

Darren Moore had guided the Baggies to the top of the division with a narrow 2-3 win over Preston North End at the end of September.

Having assembled an eclectic mix of individuals who were able to combine together and work as a solid team, Moore wasn’t content with his side and went out to snap up a free agent to bolster his attacking options.

After the transfer window had closed, that was all the Baggies boss could operate with and having left Premier League side Crystal Palace in the summer, the Midlands club swooped on out-of-contract attacker Bakary Sako.

The 30-year-old rejected a new deal with the Eagles and left Selhurst Park in search of a new club and a fresh challenge.

It may have taken longer than he initially had anticipated, it arrived on October 2, 2018, agreed on a deal to move to the Hawthorns until the end of the 2018/19 season.

Sako managed to start, and three substitute appearances in his five Championship outings, as well as an FA Cup start – scoring the winner in the 1-0 win over Wigan Athletic in the third round.

The 30-year-old would leave West Brom in the January transfer window and move back to the club from where he arrived, after just three months in the Midlands.

The reaction was mediocre with plenty of welcoming messages, but few and far between were the ones of positive opinion.

A few offered insights into what kind of signing they thought it was but there was not an overwhelming sense that the Baggies and signed a player who can be a game changer.

And they were right to think that as three months later he left the club and moved back to Palace - thus vindicating the reaction, his initial arrival garnered.
