‘Excellent news’, ‘Great signing’ – Plenty of Derby fans were delighted at 2015 arrival – But was he a success?

It’s fair to say that Derby have had a number of players that have struggled to make a significant impact with the Rams since signing.

But one man who endured a mixed spell with the Rams was Darren Bent.

The club confirmed the signing of the former England forward on 8th June 2015, and his arrival was met with a positive reaction from the club’s supporters.

Bent had previously been on loan with the Rams before making his loan move a permanent one.

He netted 12 goals in just 17 appearances, so it’s clear to see why the club opted to make his loan move a permanent one at the earliest of opportunities.

Bent went on to score 16 goals in 67 appearances for the club, and was first-choice striker for the majority of his time at the club.

But he was released by the club on the expiration of his contract, at the end of the 2017/2018 season after failing to make a single appearance for the Rams.

The veteran striker spent the season on loan with Burton Albion, where he netted twice in 15 appearances for the Championship side as they were relegated to League One.

But it was never likely that he was going to have a future at Derby, as they looked to start a new era at the club by signing higher-profile younger players instead of the ageing squad that Bent had been part of.

On the whole, Derby supporters will be slightly frustrated with his lack of consistent goals in what arguably was one of Derby’s strongest sides in the Championship for some time.
