Elland Road has been listed as an asset of community value, meaning that the famous old ground has gained protection from being sold by its current owners for a period of at least six months.

In an article in the Yorkshire Evening Post, it was revealed that owner Andrea Radrizzani - whose company United own the stadium - backed the plans by Leeds City Council, and has vowed to ensure massive improvements to the ground in a project entitled Elland Road 2020.

The protection also ensures that the stadium is protected from demolition and for use of any primary purpose other than football, and also provides the City Council with a compulsory purchase agreement should they feel that the venue is under threat.

The move ensures the viability and security of the stadium, which has changed hands several times since the club moved into the ground back in 1919.
