After a disappointing season the year prior, Coventry City were in the middle of a play-off push during the 2015/16 campaign.

Tony Mowbray’s men had improved dramatically over the summer and added a certain Adam Armstrong to their ranks as they mounted a serious charge on the top-six in League One.

Having completed their transfer plans in January, the club had slipped down the table after a thoroughly impressive start to the season.

Mowbray could see the morale ebbing away from the players and looked to the emergency loan market to add some youth and charisma to his flagging side.

And on March 18, 2016, Jodi Jones arrived on-loan from Dagenham and Redbridge with a view to a permanent deal in the summer of 2016.

The arrival sparked a reaction from the Sky Blue’s supporters, with many of them thrilled to have the then 18-year-old on board for the final ten matches of the season.

With the club just three points off a top-six place, Jones made his debut on March 25, 2016, in a 3-1 defeat away at Peterborough United.

He would go on to play five more matches during his loan spell at Coventry as they finished eighth in the table, missing out on the post-season lottery by five points.

It was an agonising end after such a solid start to the League One campaign, but less than two weeks after the completion of the season, there was news to soften the blow.

On May 10, 2016, Jones signed a permanent four-year deal with Coventry.

The contract would start on July 1, and he signed for an undisclosed fee from the relegated League Two side.

And it was a deal that certainly unified the Sky Blues’ fanbase, with the majority of them over the moon with the full-time capture of the attacker.

The following season, in the 2016/17 campaign, Coventry were relegated, but Jones was a shining light in what was such a dark, dark year.

He scored twice and made 45 appearances in all competitions for the League One side as they dropped down to the fourth tier of English football.

The 2017/18 season started with a bang in League Two when Jones scored a hat-trick in the opening day win against Notts County.

He would play 22 games in all competitions and score five goals, but his campaign would end in abrupt fashion on November 21, 2017, when he picked up an Anterior Cruciate Ligament injury, ruling him out for the rest of that season.

Coventry would win promotion at the first attempt in Jones’ absence, and after ten months out, he would make his comeback in the League One draw with Sunderland on September 29, 2018.

Having scored one goal in his nine appearances this term so far, he is slowly getting back to his best and is one of the most influential members of the Coventry City side.

The reaction to his signing has proven to be worthwhile, and despite his long-term injury setback, Jones arrived back on the scene as impressive as he was when he originally signed two years ago.
