Barnsley are edging closer to completing their second signing of the summer, with Derby County winger Luke Thomas set to arrive at Oakwell.

The Tykes have already completed the permanent signing of Mike-Steven Bahre from Hannover 96, and Daniel Stendel's side could now be set to confirm another arrival.

According to Gloucestershire Live, Barnsley are close to completing the £1.2m signing of Thomas from Derby, after enjoying an impressive loan spell with Coventry City last term.

The 20-year-old scored five goals and produced five assists for the Sky Blues last term, but may not be given the chance to impress under Frank Lampard next season, with a move to Oakwell on the cards.

Here, FLW writer George Harbey discusses this potential signing in today's six-pointer...

Firstly, what did you make of Thomas' season last term?

I thought that he had a really impressive season for Coventry last term.

He played in plenty of games and had contributed to plenty of goals, and as time went by, you could tell that he was definitely maturing as a player.

He probably would have liked to have scored more goals than he did, and that's an area which Mark Robins previously touched upon too.

Is he ready for the Championship?

I'd say that's more than deserving of a chance to prove himself in the Championship.

He proved himself in League One, and I thought he would be given a chance to shine at Derby next season.

I don't think he'd be a regular starter for Barnsley, and it's important that Daniel Stendel gives him time before chucking him in at the deep end, if he does sign of course.

What traits would he bring to Barnsley?

Thomas is a very fast, direct winger who loves to get the ball down and run at defenders.

Barnsley's style of play would suit him to a tee, as they love to play attractive, fast-paced football, and the winger would fit right into that.

There are areas he needs to work on, such as his finishing and defensive work, but going forward, he is a very talented player.

Are Derby making a mistake by letting him go?

I think that it looks like a very rash decision.

Thomas has had a good season out on loan, and knowing how much Lampard likes to work with youngsters, I'm surprised to see him closing in on a move away from Pride Park.

He really impressed under Lampard in pre-season last time out, so to see him move on would be very odd.

Is £1.2million the right price for the winger?

I think £1.2million is a bargain for Thomas, and it would be an excellent bit of business by Stendel's side if they are to sign him.

Realistically, just over £1million is nothing for clubs in the Championship nowadays, and for that amount of money, Barnsley look to be signing a player with serious potential.

Derby must be looking for a hefty sell-on clause, as £1.2million is a steal.

Is Barnsley a good move for him?

Out of all the teams in the Championship, I would say that Barnsley is probably the right move for him.

He is likely to get plenty of game-time under Stendel, and the German is a coach who loves to give youth a chance.

This would be an excellent signing for the Tykes.
