It's recently been reported by The Sun (10/11, page 59), that Middlesbrough are interested in signing Fleetwood Town winger Wes Burns ahead of the January transfer window.

Middlesbrough are struggling to stay afloat in the Championship and occupy one of places in the relegation zone heading into the international break.

In our latest FLW Six Pointer, we look into Middlesbrough's interest in more detail.

Firstly, how has Burns performed this season for Fleetwood?

"Burns hasn't been at his best in front of goal as he's yet to find the back of the net for the League One club.

"He does have four assists to his name though, and has played his part in Fleetwood's positive start to the season. Joey Barton's side are well in contention to win promotion to the Championship this term.

"They'll be keen to keep hold of Burns for the remainder of this year's campaign, but the winger could be tempted by a move to a more reputable club in Middlesbrough in the January transfer window."

Would he be a good signing for Middlesbrough?

"I think he would be a good addition to their squad this season.

"There's no doubting that Middlesbrough are struggling this term, and Woodgate needs to take a chance in the transfer market in January.

"Burns doesn't have the best of records in terms of goals, but he's a natural winger that would certainly offer something different that Woodgate's side don't have at the moment.

"Something needs to change, and fast."

Would he be a regular starter for Boro?

"I think he'd come straight into the starting XI.

"With the position that Middlesbrough are in, Woodgate won't be signing players to be used on a rotational basis, so it would make sense for him to go into the starting XI at the earliest of opportunities.

"Middlesbrough need to take a chance on new players heading into the January transfer window, otherwise they're going to be dropping into the third tier this season."

Who could be replace in the starting XI then?

"Jonny Howson could be the player to make way for Burns if he was to arrive in January.

"The former Norwich man has been forced to play out wide which isn't his natural position, so it's understandable that he hasn't offered much going forward this season.

"It certainly wouldn't come as a surprise to see Burns replace him in the starting XI if he signed for Boro, as he offers all of the right attributes going forward in wide areas."

Does he have any experience of playing in the Championship?

"He's previously played for Bristol City at the start of his professional career.

"He made 14 appearances for the Robins back in the 2015/16 season so he has got experience at this level which will be a real plus for Jonathan Woodgate.

"But it's in the lower leagues where Burns has made a name for himself, and he'd arrive at the Riverside full of confidence, so he could be a useful player to have in the Middlesbrough squad."

Finally, can you see Middlesbrough surviving in the Championship with Burns in their squad?

"I think he could be exactly what they need to retain their status as a Championship club.

"Burns is a player that will be eager to prove himself in the second tier after a relatively quiet spell with Bristol City earlier in his career.

"If he is signed alongside a couple of other players who are experienced at this level, then they'll certainly be in with a chance of surviving this season."
