The biggest match of Aston Villa’s season is coming up on Monday afternoon when they face Derby County at Wembley in the Championship play-off final.
Dean Smith’s side scraped past West Brom in the semi-finals, winning on penalties at the Hawthorns last week, but they will remain confident of booking their place back in the top-flight.
And according to the Newcastle Chronicle, they are already planning a shopping spree if they are promoted with Newcastle United’s Isaac Hayden reportedly on their radar.
The midfielder has been a regular member of Rafa Benitez’s squad this season but is expected to leave in the coming window to move further south.
But would this be a good move for Villa?
“This would be a really good signing.
“Hayden has experience in the Premier League, which is exactly what Dean Smith will need to add to his squad next season if they win promotion.
“Hayden would offer the ideal protection to the Villa defence, but they’ll have to act swiftly to strike a deal with him as he’s likely to be a player in demand over the summer.”
“Hayden is clearly someone who has been on Villa’s radar for some time after he was linked with a move there in January.
“He is a solid Premier League midfielder who would therefore be a decent addition to Villa’s side.
“However, I think Villa could be priced out for a move for him, as he would likely be very expensive. Villa might be better off directing their focus at a more cost-effective deal, as they already have good numbers in midfield.”
“I cannot help but find this a bit underwhelming.
“Yes, Hayden has Premier League experience which is always going to be attractive to a promoted side, but he has hardly shone in the top-flight.
“Villa do need to strengthen and I don’t think Hayden would be a bad signing exactly, I just think Villa could do better for the money being demanded.”
