Former West Brom forward Kevin Campbell has insisted that getting Sam Johnstone to sign a new deal would be huge for the Baggies and believes they have the strongest squad in the league if he remains.
It has been a nervous summer transfer period for West Brom over the long-term future of Johnstone after interest from Premier League side West Ham United.
However, it has recently been reported by Football Insider that the England international is now set to remain at the Hawthorns this season. That comes despite the fact that the keeper is currently heading into the final 12 months of his existing deal with the Baggies.
Ismael has recently confessed to the Express and Star that West Brom are in talks with Johnstone and his representatives over a possible new deal that would commit his long-term future to the Baggies.
Quiz: Have West Brom won or lost more against each of these 25 English teams?
Speaking to Football Insider, Campbell insisted that getting Johnstone to agree a new deal would be excellent news for the Baggies and would guarantee them a large fee if he is ever sold on. While he also claimed that keeping hold of the keeper would give Ismael the best squad in the league
He said: “Look, that would be great news.
“West Brom would be in a much better position if they kept Sam Johnstone. He is someone who has been there, seen it and done it when it comes to the Championship.
“He is an England international goalkeeper so of course he makes the team a lot stronger.
“If he signed a long-term contract it would be massive. That way if anyone wanted him they would have to pay a big fee. It secures the club which is a good move all round in my eyes.
“Listen, if Johnstone stays they have the strongest team in the league, without a doubt.”
It does seem as though Johnstone is open to the idea of remaining at the Hawthorns beyond this season and that is massive for the Baggies as Campbell suggests.
Obviously, Johnstone’s long-term future at the Hawthorns will be dependent on whether they can secure an immediate return to the Premier League this season.
The early signs that West Brom can do that this term have been promising and the keeper will have a huge role to play for them in terms of achieving that goal.
West Brom do have quality options available to them in most positions but you need to have a strong goalkeeper to be able to challenge for promotion.
Therefore, having Johnstone in their side could give the Baggies that extra bit of quality that they need to bounce back to the Premier League.
Even if West Brom did not go up, getting Johnstone to agree to a new deal would mean that they would be able to raise vital transfer funds through cashing in on him next summer. So, a new deal would be a win-win situation for them.
