Ex-pro reveals why Leeds man might not feature much in run-in

Quoted by Football Insider, Noel Whelan has suggested that Jean-Kevin Augustin could be as low as third-choice striker when it comes to the season resuming in the Sky Bet Championship.

There was a great deal of excitement when the powerful forward joined the club in the January window but we’ve seen little of him in a white shirt so far.

Indeed, he’s had fitness issues to overcome and the hope will be during this period of no football he will be able to get as sharp as possible.

However, former Leeds star Whelan reckons that he could well be behind both Patrick Bamford and Tyler Roberts in the pecking order in terms of strikers when the campaign is back up and running – as it intends to be.

Whelan said:

“There is no secret. Patrick Bamford is number one. You go with your tried and tested – at the moment Patrick is doing the job.

“Then there is Tyler Roberts in the wings who did very well at Hull. At the moment [Augustin] is sitting there as the third-choice. He will have to fight and work his way into the reckoning because right now there are players that are well ahead of him.

“You have to make sure he is right. He has lost the weight because, if not, you are going to have another injury on your hands. It will be back to square one.

“I would suggest sticking with tried and tested right now.”

The Verdict

There can be no argument that Bamford is likely still seen as number one for the striker’s role by Marcelo Bielsa, with him already getting the better of Eddie Nketiah in that battle.

Tyler Roberts hasn’t played much either this season, but when he has been on the pitch he’s shown some promising flashes.

For Whelan, what he’s shown warrants a spot ahead of Augustin right now as well.
