Blackburn midfielder Joe Rothwell has been in scintillating form for his side so far this season and it's led to more interest in his services ahead of the winter transfer window - and with Rangers linked (according to The Scottish Sun), former Rovers shot-stopper Paul Robinson has told Football Insider that he believes he is a 'top player' that would shine in Scotland.

The 26-year-old has featured in 14 games for Blackburn so far this season and remains a key player for Rovers, having played in over 133 games in total for the side since joining them from Oxford back in 2018.

He's established himself as a reliable presence in the middle of the field, a player that boss Tony Mowbray often turns to and he's well capable of bagging goals and assists whether he is deployed in the centre of the field or even out on the wing (as his one goal and four assists so far this year can attest).

It's led to him catching the eye of a multitude of teams and one of them being Rangers, the SPL side that stormed to the title last season.

Now, former Blackburn shot-stopper Paul Robinson has spoken out to Football Insider about the player potentially upping sticks and making the move to Scotland and believes the midfielder would 'walk into' the current Rangers side due to his talent. He said: "He is a very, very good Championship player and he has done extremely well at Blackburn.

“Rangers are clever because they know they don’t have the finances of a Premier League club when it comes to transfers. But the way that they have brought players in like John Lundstram on free transfers, it’s a very savvy way of doing business.

"He’s a top player who would walk straight into that Rangers team as well."

Rothwell is, of course, out of contract at Ewood Park at the end of the current campaign. Tony Mowbray would no doubt like to tie one of his key players down to a new deal to keep him at the club but with interest mounting, they could be resigned to losing the midfielder on a free transfer, unless they choose to cash-in earlier.

The Verdict

Joe Rothwell has shone in a Blackburn Rovers shirt, so it's no wonder he is drawing some admiring glances from other teams. Making the move to Rangers could potentially allow the former Man United man to win a league title or even feature in Europe, which will no doubt be a tempting proposition for him.

Blackburn though will not want to lose him but it looks like they will face a battle to keep him at the club. The decision facing Tony Mowbray may very well be whether to keep him for as long as possible and let him leave for nothing or to cash-in on the player when they can.
