Coyle has recently left his role as head coach of MLS side Houston Dynamo, recording a win percentage of just 30% in his 46 games.
It is believed that Coyle has ended his American journey early in order to pursue a job back in England – making him firm favourite to become the new manager at Ewood Park.
Managerless Rovers, who announced in April that Paul Lambert would be leaving the club at the end of the 2015/16 season, endured a difficult campaign last season which included derby defeats to Preston, Burnley and Bolton, eventually finishing in 15th place on 55 points.
Whether the appointment of Coyle would go down well with Blackburn supporters remains to be seen, with Coyle having previously managed the latter two of their main three Lancashire rivals.
