Former Portsmouth player Liam Lawrence has stated that Kenny Jackett's side will have a real chance of promotion if their strikers can get into double figures for goals this season.

Pompey are currently rotating between two forwards at the club, Ellis Harrison and John Marquis. The former has scored just five times despite featuring in 26 games throughout the current campaign, while Marquis has netted seven goals and will hope to improve on that tally before the season is finished.

Portsmouth are in sixth place in the League One table, although have a number of games-in-hand on some other sides in the division. Winning those games could take them into the automatic promotion places, which would give them a great opportunity of earning a place in the Championship at the end of the current campaign.

Lawrence has expressed that the strikers could well play a key role in the run-in and that if they can both get to double figures then they'll be right in the mix for promotion.

Speaking on EFL on Quest, Lawrence said: "I was pleased that Ellis Harrison and Marquis scored.

"Ellis has got five goals this year, Marquis has got seven. It was great finish by Ellis. I was at Bristol Rovers with him and he was a really good young footballer. "If Portsmouth can get them into double figures for the season then they’ll have a real chance of going up."

The Verdict

It’s set to be one of the best run-ins that League One has seen in a while. There are a number of teams who can still get promotion and Portsmouth are one of them.

Pompey will be hoping they can continue their excellent form throughout the last couple of months in order to go on and claim a spot in the top two.

If they can get their strikers scoring consistently until the end of the campaign then they have a great chance of being in the top two come May.

It could be one of the best finishes to a season that the division has ever seen and Jackett will be looking to make sure his side are in the Championship by the end of it.
