Managerless Nottingham Forest host Arsenal in the FA Cup Third Round off the back of a 0-0 draw against Leeds United at Elland Road on New Year’s Day.
Even on their own turf, they are 9/2 and huge underdogs to get a result from the game but the game represents a massive chance to change the mood around the club and cause an upset.
For that reason, I would not make many changes from the side that held out so resiliently at Elland Road as they will need a similar rearguard action against Arsene Wenger’s side.
Former Rangers forward Billy McKay played against Leeds but an even more conservative approach is needed against Arsenal. To pack the midfield with a 4-3-3, I would bring in the experience of David Vaughan.
He has played against this calibre of players before, in the Premier League and at international level. You lose the unpredictability and goal threat of McKay, but he could be utilised off the bench if needs be.
Matty Cash will work all day long to protect Eric Lichaj and along with Kieran Dowell, who is capable of spectacular strikes, get up and support lone striker and academy prospect Ben Brereton.
The odds are against Forest springing an upset but they have nothing to lose, and Gary Brazil could make a last-ditch attempt to get the job on a full-time basis.
Forest fans – what do you make of the team? Would you make more changes? Let us know in the comments below…
