Kenny Burns feels that Nottingham Forest should sign West Bromwich Albion striker Charlie Austin in the January transfer window.

Forest have made a promising start to the season under Sabri Lamouchi, although many feel that the Frenchman will need to strengthen his attacking options in January if the Reds are to maintain their promotion push.

Lewis Grabban is Forest's main striker at the moment and is currently their top scorer with ten goals, but many feel that the Reds must sign another forward in the New Year in case he gets injured.

The Reds have been linked with Newcastle United's Dwight Gayle - who scored 24 goals while on loan at West Brom last season - but Forest legend Burns has admitted that current Albion striker Austin would be his preferred choice.

Austin joined West Brom on a two-year deal from Southampton in the summer and after a bit of a slow start to life at the Hawthorns, he now has eight goals in all competitions and has scored six in his last five Championship matches.

Burns told Nottinghamshire Live: "Dwight Gayle’s name keeps cropping up. But I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Charlie Austin would be my choice to bring in. He gets goals - he scored two for West Brom at the weekend."

The Verdict

Forest are crying out for a new striker in January and I personally think Charlie Austin would be an excellent signing for the Reds. He's got all the attributes of a top centre-forward and could be able to provide the goals to fire Forest to promotion.

He's got plenty of experience in the Championship and he knows exactly what it takes to score goals at his level - his record in the division is pretty exceptional.

With that said though, he only joined West Brom in the summer and I'd be totally shocked if they were to sell him to a potential promotion rival halfway through the season.

It would be an ambitious move from Forest and as much as Austin would be a great signing for the Reds, I really can't see it happening.
