Former Manchester United defender Paul McShane says a short phone call with manager Steve Bruce ended his career with the Tigers.

The centre back arrived at Hull in 2008 on loan from Premier League side Sunderland, before completing a permanent deal in 2009, going on to become a fan's favourite at the Tigers making over 100 appearances at the KC.

The Republic of Ireland international was sent to train with the Hull under-21s at the end of last year after a massive fallout with Steve Bruce, after sending a tweet saying how unhappy he was over a lack of game time.

He was released at the end of last season after the club was relegated from the Premier League, and is currently in talks with Reading over a move to the Madejski Stadium, to replace Alex Pearce.

McShane told the Irish Mirror: “I think there were a lot of people surprised by the news, but I could see it coming a little bit,” he said.

“I do feel a bit let down, but that’s the game, that’s football, there’s no romance in the game.

“I had to fly straight home to Cork for my coaching badges after the league ended, so it was a phone call and that was pretty much it after six-and-a-half years.

“I was the longest-serving player there. I spoke to Steve, who said the club had no money to offer me. But I don’t know... that’s what was said to me. I said, ‘OK, thanks. I’ll move on’.

“It could be more human, but that’s how it is – there’s no romance in football.

“People move on and I’ve got to move on. I had a good bond with the club, I had a good bond with the players, the fans – everyone around.

“So, it’s a little bit disappointing and I move to the next challenge.”

Hull are rebuilding this summer to mount a promotion challenge, for an immediate return to the Premier League.
