Round returns to Pride Park, now known as the iPro Stadium for commercial sponsorship reasons, to link up with Steve McClaren, a former friend and teammate in his playing days at the East Midlands side.

Unfortunately Round's career as a full-back was short lived, appearing on only nine occasions for Derby having been plagued with injuries, eventually retiring from football and joining the club's coaching staff.

Round stayed at Derby until 2001 when McClaren was appointed manager of Middlesbrough and hired his former teammate to be part of his coaching staff at the then Premier League outfit.

This allegiance proved successful and was to be continued with Round receiving a role in the England coaching staff as soon as McClaren was unveiled as the new manager in 2006.

Round temporarily stayed at Middlesbrough alongside his role in the England set-up but left due to a “difference in philosophy and ideas” with the newly appointed boss Gareth Southgate, despite having three and a half years left on his contract at the Riverside.

After a spell as first team coach of Newcastle which was followed by assistant managerial duties under David Moyes at both Everton and Manchester United, Round is now to be re-united with McClaren at Derby as the club strive for promotion back to the Premier League.

McClaren told Sky Sports News of the appointment: "Roundy is not working at present. He's got a good relationship with myself and Derby County, so we might just use him for the odd day or two to help us on the training field."

The ex-England manager was also full of praise for his former teammate in stating "he is a top quality coach." Round joins the coaching set-up in a good period for the club, who currently sit just 3 points off of Championship league leaders Bournemouth.
