Lancashire Telegraph columnist Paul Wheelock says that Luke Varney may have talked himself out of getting a new deal at Blackburn Rovers.

Varney, who is out injured for the next six months after rupturing an Achilles tendon playing for Ipswich Town, has made it clear that he wants to stay at Portman Road where the striker ended the season on loan.

“I’ve had a lot of clubs in my career but being at Ipswich has been my highlight" said the 32-year-old to the Lancashire Telegraph.

“I know that’s a big thing to say, considering I was only there for a couple of months, but I just felt like a real family member from day one. I’ve never been at a club that’s so united.

“Six months ago, when I was out of the picture at Blackburn, I’d lost a little bit of love for the game. That’s why I’m so grateful to Mick McCarthy and Ipswich Town.

“I just want to be part of Ipswich Town Football Club.”

Wheelock believes Blackburn were considering keeping Varney but his latest comments may now end those chances.

Rovers had announced their retained list on Saturday and it was reported that Varney was on that list along with Chris Taylor.

But in fact neither have been offered a new contract by Blackburn nor have they shut the door on the pair and manager Gary Bowyer has stated that he wants to keep Taylor at Ewood Park.

Varney failed to score in 26 appearances for Rovers and moved to Ipswich on loan in February which, on the outside, looked all but the end of his time with the Lancashire club.

Bowyer is hoping Josh King will sign the new contract put to him but the futures of strike force Rudy Gestede and Jordan Rhodes is up in the air.

With the club currently under a transfer embargo, Rovers may have to sell one or even both of their prolific top-scorers.

With the future of Rhodes and Gestede uncertain, Varney would have likely been kept on as a good back-up option but Wheelock believes his public statement will have been noted by the Blackburn hierarchy.
