Former Leeds United defender Hugo Diaz took to Twitter yesterday to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the Whites' Professional Development League National title win.

Under the management of Carlos Corberan, Leeds U23s won the 2018/19 PDL North title with two games to spare and took on PDL South winners Birmingham City in the National final a year ago today.

The game ended level but Corberan's side won the resulting penalty shoot-out, with Jack Clarke firing in the decisive penalty.

Diaz was a key part of the U23s' success, with the Spanish central defender making 29 appearances last term.

He left Elland Road to join Getafe in the summer but took to Twitter yesterday to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the win and reach out to the Elland Road faithful.

The 23-year-old spent two seasons with Leeds but despite being a key figure in the U23s, and the sort of ball-playing centre-back you felt could appeal to Marcelo Bielsa, made just one senior appearance for the Whites – coming off the bench in a 3-1 loss to Preston North End in May 2018.

At Getafe, the Spaniard has once again struggled for first-team opportunities but has made 26 appearances for the club's B side this term.

The Verdict

Diaz may have only been at Leeds for two years but it appears that the club, and the success he had their last season, means a lot to him.

Judging from the response of Whites supporters to his tweet, the Spaniard is a popular figure despite the fact that things didn't work out for him at Elland Road.

That is perhaps understandable given the quality of centre-backs the club have had over the past few seasons.
