Quoted by MOT Leeds, former Leeds United goalkeeper Paul Robinson has revealed how Illan Meslier could become the permanent number one stopper at the club for next season - with him currently filling in for Kiko Casilla.

Spanish goalkeeper Casilla has been the first choice goalkeeper since arriving and, for much of Meslier's time at Leeds, he has had to play second fiddle.

However, with Casilla currently serving a suspension, Meslier has been offered a chance to shine and, so far, he has done well between the sticks.

For Robinson, then, if he can continue to impress between now and the season's conclusion, he could be the main man in goal for next season - which could well see United back in the Premier League.

The former England international said:

“Meslier’s done okay since he’s come in. He’s got between now and until the end of the season – if and when that should be – to stake his claim because Kiko’s form was inconsistent before the ban and if Meslier does well, the gloves are his.”

The Verdict

Meslier certainly appears a confident young goalkeeper and so far he has been pretty impressive when standing in for Casilla.

Certainly, you would not say that the Spaniard immediately walks back into the side once his suspension is served and that is all Meslier can really do right now - ensure he has given Marcelo Bielsa a selection headache.

In terms of next season, though, a lot will also depend on United sealing a permanent deal for the young stopper.
