England booked their place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2020 last night, defeating old rivals Germany 2-0 at Wembley.
The whole country was sent into delirium when second-half goals from Raheem Sterling and Harry Kane secured a huge win for the Three Lions.
It was a game which was largely dictated by midfield battles, with Declan Rice and Kalvin Phillips nullifying Leon Goretzka and Toni Kroos.
Phillips continues to impress in what is his first ever major tournament as an England player, and the Leeds United midfielder’s performance on Tuesday night earned rave reviews.
The 25-year-old has come on leaps and bounds since Marcelo Bielsa arrived at Elland Road in 2018, and he is now asserting his dominance on the international stage.
Former Leeds boss and current Fleetwood manager Simon Grayson took to Instagram last night to rave about Phillips’ display.
The 51-year-old insists that he “absolutely loves” watching Phillips play, and believes he does “everything a midfield player should do”.
Quiz: Did each of these 18 ex-Fleetwood Town players ever score a goal at Highbury?
We have seen Phillips turn from a boy into a man under Bielsa for Leeds, especially in the Championship when he helped lead the Whites to promotion.
He’s made the step up to the Premier League with ease, and is now arguably one of the first names on Gareth Southgate’s teamsheet.
The staff at Elland Road who have helped Phillips develop and improve as a player from a young age will be watching his performances with real pride, and rightly so.
Let’s hope he can continue to impress and England keep on winning football matches.
