There was much surprise from Ipswich supporters when David McGoldrick departed Town at the conclusion of last season.

So it was no surprise to see him being snapped up by another Championship side in Sheffield United shortly after he departed Portman Road.

McGoldrick had his fair share of injury problems in his time with the Tractor Boys but he scored some crucial goals for them in a six-year-spell with the club.

The forward revealed that he was open to the idea of staying with Ipswich, but Paul Hurst reportedly made it clear that he wasn't part of his plans this season (quotes sourced from Ireland FA press conference via TWTD).

"I was open to staying there but the new manager came in and said no,

"That was in June, so I started to look around. I got seven goals last year and you can’t go knocking down the doors of clubs saying, ‘Sign me, Sign me!’

McGoldrick also admitted that he got too comfortable at Ipswich, as there were no major expectations for the club, unlike at Sheffield United this season.

"I maybe got a bit too comfortable at Ipswich, although I loved my time there.

"We were mid-table and there were no big expectations to win every game, like there is at Sheffield United at the moment.

Despite being at the age of 31, McGoldrick never doubted his love of the game and is keen to continue to score goals for the Blades.

"I didn’t want to stop playing football. I wanted to be back doing it every day and scoring goals."

Sheffield United are next in action when they take on Bristol City at Bramall Lane after the international break has taken place.

The Verdict:

What a bizarre decision this was by Hurst if it's true.

McGoldrick might not have had age on his side but he could certainly have played his part in keeping Ipswich in the Championship this season.

This ludicrous decision could cost them dearly as they look certain to be relegated to League One.
