The 32-year-old spent nearly ten years at Chelsea, making over 200 appearances, winning the Premier League twice as well as the FA Cup four times and was also part of the Champions League winning squad in 2011-12.

The Sun broke the news that Essien is eyeing a Premier League return and added that he has also had offers from the MLS, but is keen to remain in Europe.

The Ghana international is currently playing in Italy with AC Milan but is out-of-contract in the summer and has been redistricted to only 13 appearances for the Serie A club.

The 2006 African Footballer of the Year is said to be no longer needed by manager Filippo Inzaghi and is free to leave the San Siro.

Watford boss Slavisa Jokanovic is keen to get experience into the Hornets squad and with Adlene Guedioura's loan set to expire, Essien could be the perfect signing at Vicarage Road.
