Aitor Karanka is keen to speak to Huddersfield Town about their vacant managerial position, Sky Sports have reported.

The Terriers are searching for a new manager after sacking Jan Siewert on Friday, with the German having won just one of his 19 games in charge of the club.

According to the latest report, one man who is keen to take over from Siewert is Karanka, with the Spaniard apparently eager to talk to club officials about a move to the John Smith's Stadium.

Karanka has previously managed in the second tier of English football with both Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest, with the Spaniard guiding 'Boro to promotion to the Premier League in 2016.

The 45-year-old has been out of work since January, when he left Forest after asking to be released from his contract, with the club seventh in the Championship table, just four points and one position off the play-offs at the time of his departure.

As well as Karanka, former Derby and Birmingham boss Gary Rowett and current QPR assistant manager John Eustace have also been linked with the job, while Mark Hudson, who is currently in caretaker charge of the club, has admitted that he would be interested in the job full time.

The Verdict

I think this could be a good appointment for Huddersfield.

Karanka has got plenty of experience in the Championship from his time at Middlesbrough and Nottingham Forest, so he will be more than ready to cope with the demands of the division.

The Spaniard is also someone who can organise his teams well defensively, and with the number of errors that Huddersfield have made in games even since their return to the Championship, you do feel that the solidity Karanka himself brings could help provide some much-needed stability at the club.

It already seems as though there are several options for Huddersfield to consider, and given how early in the season we are, it could be a smart move for the club to give themselves a bit more time in order to make sure they get the right man in as Siewert's replacement.
