With Aston Villa still yet to appoint a new manager after the departure of Steve Bruce last week, many high-profile names have been linked to the job at the Championship club.

But former Aston Villa and Liverpool striker Stan Collymore has blasted the club's current owners and questioned their footballing knowledge as he states that Brendan Rodgers should be the man Villa chase to take the managerial vacancy at the club.

On Collymore's social media, he responded to questions about Rodgers.

"Our owners have zero clue about football recruitment. Zero. Fact."

On the appointment of Rodgers, Collymore described him as "the perfect appointment" whose knowledge of the league would help aid Aston Villa's promotion bid this season.

"Super coach, managed at two huge clubs, track record of finding young gems in and out of the club, front foot football and knows the league."

Rodgers has been a huge success at Celtic since his appointment in May 2016, and has won the domestic treble with Celtic in consecutive seasons. His side currently sit 3rd in the Scottish Premiership, just three points adrift of Hearts who currently sit top of the table.

Early on Monday, Rodgers ruled himself out of the race to become Villa boss, but it remains to be seen whether the Championship club will tempt the Celtic manager in with an offer.

The verdict:

Rodgers would be an excellent appointment for Aston Villa and I echo Collymore's comments about the former Liverpool manager knowing the Championship well, after previous spells with Reading and Swansea City.

He won promotion with Swansea so he knows exactly what is required to get a team out of the Championship and into the Premier League, which is where all Villa fans believe they should be.

Many will argue that the Scottish league is too easy for Celtic but Rodgers' side have proven everyone how dominant they can be, after going the whole of the 2016/2017 season unbeaten in a remarkable achievement for his side.
