Holgate is a wanted man

The 18-year-old has recently had a ten-day trial at United, after being identified as a new prospect. United directors could now consider putting £1 million offer on the table to buy the player, but Holgate might still snub the chance to join the Red Devils in favour of a more genuine opportunity to play regular football.

Amid this uncertainty, Everton are reportedly lurking. The Daily Post suggested that the Liverpool side might hijack the move, just like they did with another Oakwell product; John Stones.

The Tykes boss Lee Johnson has admitted that the youngster was on his way out, saying that a chance for Holgate to train with a team like Manchester United was too big to turn down.

Holgate has undoubted potential and could turn out to be a massive signing for a Premier League club, with him most likely set to have a huge sell on value if he prospers in the top-flight of English football.

The Doncaster-born defender has been at Barnsley since the age of nine, he developed through the ranks until he earned his debut for the first team last season. He went on to play 22 games, impressing across the back line and catching the eye with matured performances.

Holgate however turned down an offer to extend his contract at the end of the season, preferring to make an early move to play top flight football.
