Everton reignite interest in Nottingham Forest target

Premier League outfit Everton have revived their interest in Manchester United midfielder James Garner ahead of the summer window, according to a report from The Athletic.

The 21-year-old was one of the first names on the teamsheet for Nottingham Forest last term, making 49 competitive appearances and proving to be crucial in the Reds’ promotion-winning campaign as they climbed from the foot of the Championship table into a play-off place.

Not only was he integral in helping his side defensively, putting in a vital challenge against Huddersfield Town in last weekend’s play-off final, but he’s also been a threat going forward with four goals and 10 assists in all competitions.

When were the club founded?

Establishing himself as one of the most accomplished midfielders in the second tier, he isn’t short of interest currently with Leeds United, Southampton and Leicester City all reported to be keeping tabs on his current situation at Old Trafford as well as the Toffees.

Forest are also keen on a return for the England youth international – and will reportedly be offered the chance to re-sign him before others if United sanction another temporary move – according to 90min.

However, he isn’t guaranteed to be leaving his parent club this summer with Erik Ten Hag potentially keen to take a closer look at the young midfielder in the coming months.

The Verdict:

This could be a great signing for Frank Lampard with Donny van de Beek heading back to United – and the relationship the duo have established through that deal could help them in their quest to land Garner.

However, it looks as though Forest will be offered the option to recruit him first and that could be wise from the Red Devils’ point of view with the 21-year-old pretty much guaranteed to be a regular starter at the City Ground following his impact there during 2021/22.

They may have to offer him to the Reds early on this summer if he is guaranteed to be a regular player in the starting lineup because Forest will have other irons in the fire in terms of midfield targets and may pursue a move for an alternative to Garner if he doesn’t come in within the next few weeks or so.

Paul Pogba’s departure at United may have opened up a first-team spot for the 21-year-old but at this delicate stage of his career, he needs to be starting every week and this is why another temporary move to Forest would be the best option for him.

You can’t blame Ten Hag for wanting to take a look at him – but he’s in safe hands under the stewardship of Cooper and the Reds should be trusted to develop the midfielder once more.
