Everton's Matthew Pennington is set to join Ipswich Town on a season-long loan, as Paul Hurst looks to strenghten his squad before the deadline.

The 23-year-old is a versatile player, capable of playing as a right-back as well as in the centre of defence and will provide the Tractor Boys with depth in those positions.

Pennington spent the previous campaign on loan at Leeds United, although he struggled to establish himself as a regular with fitness issues and form meaning he only made 24 appearances for the Whites.

However, having returned to Goodison Park this summer, he has found he is not in Marco Silva's plans, with Football Insider reporting that he will join Ipswich before the 5pm deadline.

The report states that Hurst's men will have seen off interest from former club Leeds, as well as Blackburn, to land Pennington, who could go straight into the squad for Sunday's East Anglian derby against Norwich City at Portman Road.

Ipswich will be desperate for a win over their rivals as they look to climb off the bottom of the Championship table.

The Verdict

This is a good signing for Ipswich as Pennington is a player that can cover various positions and knows the league.

He will provide extra competition defensively and that's something that the team need, with Ipswich yet to keep a clean sheet this season.

Now, it's down to the player to impress in training and take his chance when it comes his way in the team.
