Derby County are set to confirm the signing of Everton midfielder Kieran Dowell on loan until the end of the season, according to journalist John Percy.

The 21-year-old underwent a medical in Florida last night and he will become Phillip Cocu's first signing since taking over as Rams boss last week.

Huddersfield Town were reportedly leading the race for Dowell's signature, but it is understood Cocu's healthy relationship with Everton's director of football Marcel Brands has helped the Rams edge in front of the Terriers.

Dowell spent the second half of last season on loan at Sheffield United, making 16 league appearances as he helped the Blades achieve automatic promotion from the Championship. He also had a season-long stint with Derby's local rivals Nottingham Forest back in the 2017/18 campaign.

He is set to sign for the Rams after spending the summer with England Under 21s at the European Championships, where he featured twice for Aidy Bothroyd's side.

The Verdict

This would represent a promising start to life under Cocu at Pride Park, as Dowell has already proven his ability to perform at a high level in the Championship.

Dowell provides plenty of creativity from midfield, and this will be particularly appealing to Derby who must replace Mason Mount and Harry Wilson's creative edge.

The Rams are making quite the statement by signing Dowell when he seemed destined for Huddersfield, and I can see the midfielder firmly establishing himself in Cocu's side next season.

This move will also permit Dowell to gain experience with a side who should be challenging for promotion next term, and it could be exactly what he needs to kick on in his career.
