According to the Birmingham Mail, Everton could look to sign Aston Villa target, Sam Johnstone, this summer, if they fail in their quest to buy Jordan Pickford from Sunderland.
Pickford is Everton’s first choice goalkeeping target this summer, but have had a reported £8m bid rejected by Sunderland, who value the 23-year old at around £30m.
Should the Toffees fail to sign Pickford, they could turn their attentions to Manchester United’s Johnstone, according to reports.
Johnstone spent the second-half of the 2016/17 campaign on-loan with Villa in the Sky Bet Championship, and he is Steve Bruce’s top transfer target this summer.
Bruce is hopeful of securing another season-long loan for the 24-year old, who made 21 league appearances for Villa last season and kept eight clean sheets.
Villa were confident of sealing a deal for Johnstone early in the transfer window, but Everton’s potential interest in the goalkeeper could prove to be a stumbling block.
