Everton are considering moves for two Championship defenders, according to The Liverpool Echo.

Middlesbrough star Ben Gibson and Swansea City defender Alfie Mawson are both transfer targets for Everton.

After selling Ramiro Funes Mori and with Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams approaching the back end of their respective careers, Everton are targeting a new centre-half this summer.

The Toffees have identified Barcelona's Yerry Mina as their top target as they seek a loan move for the 23-year-old.

The Colombia international recently scored the dramatic equaliser against England and Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford to take the game into extra time, before England sealed a victory on penalties to progress to the quarter-finals.

But with that deal in doubt, Everton are weighing up swoops for Gibson and Mawson.

Gibson has been a key man for Boro over the years and has been named in a senior England squad.

But after the 25-year-old failed to win promotion with Middlesbrough last season, a move to the Premier League could beckon.

Swansea were relegated last season and Mawson - who is another player hoping to break into Gareth Southgate's squad - is linked with a return to the Premier League.

The 24-year-old stood out for the Swans despite their relegation so Everton could swoop.

The Verdict

Mina would be an excellent addition but both Gibson and Mawson are also great players to have as back-up choices.

Both players have demonstrated their ability to perform at high levels in the top flight.

Either Gibson or Mawson could form a solid partnership with Michael Keane to strengthen Everton's defence for the long-term future.
