Middlesbrough could be bracing themselves for summer interest in talented winger Marcus Tavernier.

The Daily Mail is reporting that German Bundesliga outfit Bayern Leverkusen are keeping tabs on the 19-year-old starlet.

Tavernier has made 18 appearances for Boro this term and has been impressive under Tony Pulis.

Leverkusen are said to be monitoring his progress with a view to making an offer for his services once the transfer window opens in the summer.

The England U20 international has scored four goals this term from the wing, and can also operate at left-back too.

The Daily Mail also reports that Leverkusen are expecting some of their young players to receive interest this summer and are putting in work to replace them, should any leave.

They have watched Tavernier in the Championship and on international duty and are continuing to monitor his progress as they weigh up making an offer.

If he were to leave, Tavernier would be the latest in the series of young English footballers moving to the German top flight to be given a chance at earning a regular place in the first team.

The verdict

This seems to be a league-wide operation to get young English talent out to the Bundesliga, and it could be an opportunity the youngster could find too hard to turn down.

Tavernier has been a pretty bright spark in what has been a mediocre season by the fans’ perspective.

The football has not been great to watch, but the young winger has shown promise and verve in attack to impress any and all Boro supporters.

If he carries on playing as well as he is a move to the continent could be on the cards.
