Erik Alonso delivers Derby County target that supporters will surely love as takeover deal gathers pace

Erik Alonso is hoping to take Derby County to the Champions League as he takeover moves nearer, he told BBC Radio Derby.

Reports emerged last week via The Athletic that the Spaniard had agreed a deal with Mel Morris to complete a full takeover of the Championship club, much to the delight of supporters.

While a deal has been agreed, the arrangement is now undergoing the EFL’s Owners and Directors test with a verdict expected to come back by the end of this week.

It’s been a tough season for Derby who have been stuck in the bottom half of the Championship for much of the campaign – something that Alonso is looking to address next term as he targets promotion to the Premier League.

But while going up is a more realistic aim, Alonso isn’t putting a ceiling on his aspirations for the club.

Speaking to BBC Radio Derby, Alonso said: “My goal is to make Derby big again and get back to the Premier League as soon as possible.

“The eventual goal is the Champions League. I dream big.

“I will not bring [Lionel] Messi or Cristiano [Ronaldo] but we have to get a good squad. For sure we will make a squad to fight to get promoted back to the Premier League.”

Speaking about Wayne Rooney’s potential role in that target, he added: “Wayne Rooney was a legend as a player.

“Now he’s doing very well as a coach and he will have all the support from me.

“I have already spoken to him, I said let’s focus on staying in the league and then we can talk about next season.”

The verdict

While this has to be taken with a pinch of salt, there’s no faulting his ambitions for the club.

Derby County supporters want to see their club doing well and if that’s going to happen they will need an owner who is willing to back the club and give them what they need to succeed.

The Champions League is probably unrealistic, but if they can go up I’m sure that supporters will be more-than happy.
