Not many football fans currently would have heard of Peterborough United’s Erhun Oztumer, but he is taking the Sky Bet League One by storm, after being plucked from non-league in true Peterborough United style.

The tricky attacking midfielder joined Peterborough in 2014 after impressing down in the Isthmian League for Dulwich Hamlet, where he scored 49 goals in 78 appearances - stuff like that just doesn’t go unnoticed.

Oztumer was born to Turkish parents in London, the midfielder carries the tag of ‘Turkish Messi’ (no pressure there then Erhun) due to his love for the Argentinian legend.

He was a self-proclaimed ‘Messi geek’ as a teenager and used to study the way Messi played football knowing the ins and outs of his style.

Oztumer stands at just 5ft 3, that doesn’t matter in football anymore, many of the best wingers in the world, e.g. Alexis Sanchez and Neymar have a low sense of gravity, and can send defenders into a daze.

Send them back 20-30 years ago when the Vinnie Jones’ of the game were knocking about and it would have been a completely different story.

The little magician spent nine years at Championship side Charlton Athletic, his spell ended with the club though after they found out that his growth couldn’t go beyond 5ft 3.

That had an impact on his career with many scouts deciding that he just wasn’t the right man due to lack of height.

Oztumer spent some time back in Turkey before his career took off with well-known sides Manisaspor and Sivasspor respectively.

The 24-year-old has a promising career with Championship and Premier League sides sniffing round him after a string of impressive performances for Peterborough.

It's only a matter of time before the Turk will have followed the likes of George Boyd and Dwight Gayle out of the London Road door, to excel his career in a higher division.
