When Eoin Doyle joined Bolton Wanderers in the summer it seemed a match made in heaven but things haven't quite turned out that way.

The 32-year-old's goalscoring record in League Two is outstanding and he was one of a string of signings made by the Trotters as they looked to gear up to bounce back after dropping down into the fourth tier of English football.

In today's hat-trick, we assess what has happened since Doyle joined the North West club...

How's it gone so far?

It's not started quite in the way that either Doyle or Bolton will have been hoping for.

The Irishman scored 26 League Two goals in 28 appearances for Swindon Town last term but has managed just two in the Trotters' first eight games.

The fault doesn't all lie at Doyle's door as he's been somewhat starved of opportunities so far, averaging just one shot per game (Sofascore), but he certainly hasn't been at his best.

A hamstring issue has kept the striker sidelined for Bolton's last two games and it seems he is not yet ready to return, though manager Ian Evatt has indicated he is recovering well.

The Bolton boss has had a difficult start to life at the club after joining in the summer and his side have taken just nine points from 10 League Two games this term, leaving them just four places above the relegation zone.

All in all, it's been far from an ideal start for both the club and the player.

What issues does he face?

As the results show, Doyle is in a Bolton side that have struggled to find their feet in the fourth tier.

Given the amount of change there was over the summer, with Evatt taking charge and 21 new players joining the club, a slow start was to be expected but what we've seen from Bolton so far has been very disappointing.

The fact that Doyle has managed just one shot per game, while only three League Two teams average fewer shots on target than the Trotters this term and only four have scored fewer goals in the division, illustrates that they're having serious problems in the final third.

It's not easy to score goals in a side that is struggling offensively but that's the task that's facing the 32-year-old at the moment.

What next?

Games are going to continue to come thick and fast for Bolton, with no international break for League Two sides, and Doyle will want to ensure he's back as soon as possible.

The Trotters' start to the season has been poor but there is certainly still time to turn things around and their promotion hopes are far from over.

You'd imagine they'll need Doyle to hit the ground running when he returns from injury and rediscover his goalscoring form if they're going to climb the table.
