Football League World's Middlesbrough fan pundit Phil Wrightson has issued his verdict on the reported interest in Aberdeen striker Sam Cosgrove, indicating the club should avoid the move in January.

Jonathan Woodgate claimed he wanted to bring attacking football back to the Riverside when he took charge in the summer but things have not worked for him so far.

Boro have scored just 11 goals this season, the lowest tally of any side in the Championship, and are on course to score 13 fewer than the 49 Tony Pulis' Boro team scored last season.

It appears Woodgate may look to use the January transfer window to help to solve that problem as, according to Teamtalk, Boro are interested in a move for Cosgrove in January.

The 22-year-old has scored 15 goals in 17 appearances for the SPFL side this season and is understood to be available for around £2 million.

However, Wrightson has questioned whether adding Cosgrove would be plausible or the right move for the club to make.

He said: "I would not be averse to signing a new striker in January but the sounds coming out of the club don’t appear to be positive regarding spending any money.

"Our minimal outlay in the summer looks like it's going to be a trend we have to get used to for the next few windows.

"Woodgate’s alarming statement this week that our position in the relegation zone is a false one, it’s not–we’ve been awful, makes me wonder if he has been told that there is no money and he has to work with what we have got and he is setting our expectations.

"Irrespective of this I don’t know that a striker from the SPFL is going to add anything.

"We have had our fingers burned by strikers who succeeded in Scotland and couldn’t hack it in the Championship, as was the case with Kris Boyd, Chris Killen, and Lee Miller, and that’s enough to put me off."

Boro's poor start to the season has seen them slip down into the relegation zone, however, a victory against Derby County on Saturday could see them climb out if results elsewhere go their way.
