West Ham United confirmed the signing of Swansea goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski on Wednesday, leaving the South Wales side with a massive goalkeeping void that needs filling.

The answer to their goalkeeping woes may well lie in the league that they have just exited.

Last season, Burnley produced one of the most impressive campaigns we have seen for a long time in the top division.

Sean Dyche took a squad that would not look out of place in the Championship and took them to European qualification, finishing the season in seventh place.

The biggest breakthrough star in that squad was undoubtedly Nick Pope. Pope is currently away at the World Cup having been called up by Gareth Southgate as one of his three goalkeepers for the tournament.

Pope benefited from an injury early in the season to Burnley's then first choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton, who had himself recently been called up for England duty.

And it is Heaton who should be targeted by Graham Potter.

Why him?

At 32, Heaton may not be the most mouthwatering prospect on paper. But signing a first choice goalkeeper can be a risky decision. Get it wrong and it can cost you a multitude of points.

So experience is often a very attractive attribute. Heaton has this in abundance, with a lot of it coming in the Championship. He has won promotion from the league twice after all.

Would he leave?

At 32 it is likely that Heaton will only have two or three more seasons left to play at his current level. With Nick Pope's brilliant performance and call up for England, it is very unlikely that Heaton will be reinstalled as Burnley's number one either.

Therefore yes, he possibly would leave. There is a good chance that Burnley would want to keep him and there would not be many better back up goalkeepers in the Premier League.

But it would be a surprise if Sean Dyche and co. were to stand in the way of someone who has achieved so much for the club in the past.

Swansea need a safe pair of hands (pardon the pun), someone who still oozes quality and someone who has experience of getting out of the Championship. Tom Heaton is the perfect choice.
