England under-20s manager, Keith Downing, has stated that this season is vitally important for forward, Jonathan Leko, as he finally gets the opportunity to play as a number nine.

The 20-year-old is currently on loan at Charlton from parent club West Brom, and actually finds himself higher than the Baggies in the Championship table after six games of the season.

He netted his first goal of the season on Saturday, as he opened the his account for Lee Bowyer's side at Reading.

Leko performed well for Downing's side in their 0-0 draw with the Netherlands, and the boss explained why the season ahead is so important for the striker.

Speaking to the Express and Star, Downing said: "What everyone has to understand is he is in the first throws of playing as a number nine.

"He has played on the wing. Charlton are giving him that licence to play up-front. So it's a really, really important year for him.

"I think he has got a future there. I have been impressed with him at Charlton. He has done really well, started really well.

"He got himself a goal on Saturday. I think he is a threat in-behind. He causes problems, he has got some trickery – we all know that.

"I think with Jonathan everyone just has to be a bit patient with him. He has huge potential. He is one of those that you have to keep supporting because potentially he has a big future in the game."

The Verdict

Downing has hit the nail on the head when talking about Leko. It's a vital campaign for the striker and he has to carry on being played down the middle.

Despite Lyle Taylor's excellent form, Bowyer has continued to play with two up top, which will delight Leko, as well as Slaven Bilic, who I'm sure will be watching his development closely.

It's an interesting one as Charlton currently sit above the Baggies in the league. I wonder if a recall may be on the cards if they become promotion rivals in future months.
