Kevin Campbell has tipped West Bromwich Albion's move for Alex Mowatt as 'a no-brainer' as a summer deal moves closer.

Reports from John Percy of The Telegraph have claimed that the Baggies are closing in on a deal for the Barnsley man and could see a deal finalised before the end of the week with a medical already planned.

The 26-year-old enjoyed a wonderful season for the Tykes after scoring eight goals and creating seven more while playing a key role in helping Valerien Ismael's side to the play-offs, however it now seems that a reunion with his former boss at The Hawthorns could be on the cards.

Signing Mowatt would be a real statement of intent, and according to former striker Campbell, the Barnsley skipper would be a 'top signing'.

Speaking to Football Insider, Campbell said: “Mowatt would be a top signing.

“They need to strengthen in the midfield because Yokuslu and Maitland-Niles were only on loan. They need numbers and experience in there.

“If they can add three or four quality signing who can bring experience and competition to the squad they will be up there next season. I think they will be one of the favourites to go up.

“Mowatt knows the division and Ismael well and on a free, it’s a no-brainer.”

The verdict

It's hard to disagree with Kevin Campbell's verdict here.

Alex Mowatt was wonderful last term with Barnsley and after leading the club into the play-offs it was almost inevitable that he would attract significant interest from the top clubs in the Championship.

The fact that Valerien Ismael is now with the Baggies will surely have moved this interest forward - after all, Mowatt is a proven performer for the Frenchman.

If this deal can be struck it's hard to see the 26-year-old being anything other than a success at the Hawthorns.
