Sunderland are leading the race to sign Manchester United midfielder James Garner on loan, a report from Football Insider has claimed.

It was reported earlier this week that the Black Cats are interested in a temporary move for the 18-year-old until the end of the season, and it seems as though they are now making progress in their pursuit of the youngster.

According to the latest reports, the League One promotion chasers have entered into talks with United about bringing Garner to the Stadium of Light this season.

It is thought that United are willing to allow the teenager to leave the club this month in order to gain more regular first-team experience, and that Sunderland are now targeting Garner after missing out on a number of their other midfield targets.

A graduate of United's academy, Garner has already made seven appearances in all competitions for the Red Devils, and has been capped at Under 17, Under 18 and Under 19 level by England.

There are two-and-a-half years remaining on Garner's contract with United, securing his future at the club until the summer of 2022.

The Verdict

This does look promising for Sunderland.

It certainly seems as though they are keen on adding a central midfielder to their ranks this month, and Garner would be a promising addition in that area.

His recruitment by United suggests he has plenty of potential to be exploited, and he will surely be determined to impress ahead of his return to Old Trafford in the summer.

That is something that could well play into Sunderland's hands, as they look to make that late push for promotion back to the Championship over the next few months.
