Sheffield Wednesday manager Darren Moore could be in attendance for the Owls' crunch clash with Derby County on the final day of the season, according to his right-hand man Jamie Smith.

Wednesday's 0-0 draw with Nottingham Forest at Hillsborough yesterday, coupled with the Rams' losing 2-1 away at Swansea City means that the relegation battle in the Championship will move onto the final weekend of the season.

Unless Wycombe Wanderers can overturn a goal difference of 11 then they are already down, so that means two of the Owls, County and Rotherham United will be heading to League One, and there's a chance that the clash at Pride Park next Sunday could see both teams drop into the third tier.

Wednesday will need any boost they can get after a poor performance against Forest yesterday, so the update from Smith on Moore's health could be a piece of news that the players need.

Moore has been in the dugout for just one match since a 2-1 away win at Barnsley on March 20, with a positive COVID test before the Watford game at the start of April putting him out of action.

The 47-year-old returned for Swansea City at home on April 13 but he was soon put out of action again as he was diagnosed with pneumonia.

Moore seems to be on the mend though and his potential return at Pride Park - albeit sat in the stands - could be a massive boost.

"He [Moore] is good," said Smith following the Forest stalemate, per The Examiner.

"He's a lot better in himself. He could potentially be back in the stands for Derby."

The Verdict

Judging by the performance against Nottingham Forest, Wednesday's players need something to lift them for the biggest game of their whole season.

Moore's return could do just that - even if he's not on the touchline his presence in the stadium could give them enough motivation to get past a Derby side who don't look like they can buy a win.

Even if Moore doesn't make it though, Derby v Sheffield Wednesday is the biggest match of the whole season in the Championship and it is going to be must-watch stuff in a tantalising relegation scrap.
