Bristol City have opened talks over a move for Barry Douglas, according to reports from Football Insider.

The 31-year-old is facing an uncertain future after being told that he was set to be released from current club Leeds United at the end of his contract that expires at the end of the month.

A left-back by trade, Douglas has quite a CV after an impressive career to date.

Douglas started his career with Queen's Park in Scotland before joining Dundee United and then moving on to enjoy challenges in Turkey and Poland.

He then moved to Wolves in 2017 where he helped the club to secure promotion before moving on to Elland Road the next summer.

Since then the Scotland international has established himself as a big player for Leeds and played a central role in helping the club to secure promotion to the Premier League.

With Marcelo Bielsa's side enjoying their first campaign back in the top flight, Douglas enjoyed an excellent loan spell with Blackburn Rovers where he made 30 appearances in the Championship.

Reports first emerged last week to suggest that the Robins were considering a move for for the left-back, while Celtic and Rangers are also said to be keen.

However fresh reports from Football Insider have claimed that Bristol City aren't just in the running to sign him, but now head the list of contenders after formally making an offer.

The verdict

This would be a great signing for Bristol City.

Barry Douglas is a proven performer at Championship level and has an excellent track record of leading clubs to promotion.

A spot in the Premier League may be out of reach for the Robins right now, but there's no doubt that the 31-year-old could play a big role in helping Nigel Pearson's side to be competitive next term.

Interest in his services is likely to be high and so it's crucial that Bristol City look to get this one wrapped up as soon as possible.
