Norwich City seem as though they’re likely to be facing a losing battle to keep influential midfielder Emi Buendia at Carrow Road ahead of the 2021/22 season.
The Argentine has been with the club since 2018, and has played for them both in the Premier League and in the Championship.
The 24-year-old played a starring role in Norwich’s promotion-winning season in the 2020/21 campaign, with Buendia chipping in with 15 goals and 17 assists, as Daniel Farke’s side clinched promotion back into the Premier League at the first time of asking this term.
But it appears as though his strong performances haven’t gone unnoticed, with Arsenal being one of the favourites to land his signature in the summer transfer window.
We take a look at some of the key questions on Arsenal’s interest in signing Buendia, as the Gunners look to add attacking options to their squad ahead of the new league campaign.
Is it a good potential move?
This would be a good move for all parties involved.
Buendia is going to be wanting to play at the highest possible level at this stage of his career, and a move to the Emirates Stadium could present him with the ideal opportunity to do just that.
Arsenal certainly need additional quality in their team heading into the 2021/22 season, as they haven’t been anywhere near good enough in this year’s campaign, as they’ve missed out on a place in European competitions this term.
But with additional competition for starting spots with Buendia’s arrival, the Gunners could soon find themselves heading in the right direction.
If the finances are right for Norwich, then it’ll be a move that suits all parties involved.
Would he start?
It would be hard to believe that Buendia would go straight into the Arsenal starting XI straight away, with Mikel Arteta already having some strong options available to him.
Nicolas Pépé and Bukayo Saka have often occupied the starting spots out wide for the Gunners in the 2020/21 season, and it wouldn’t come as a surprise to see Buendia having to make do with a spot on the substitutes bench to start off with.
But that isn’t to say that Buendia isn’t more than capable of forcing his way into the starting XI relatively quickly, and if he can make an impact off the substitutes bench, then we could well see him becoming a regular in the Arsenal team for years to come.
Which Norwich City players have been carded the most for the club in each of the last 16 seasons?
What does he offer?
Buendia offers a threat going forwards, that’s for certain.
The winger chipped in with 15 goals and 17 assists for Norwich City this term, as they won promotion with relative ease from the Championship.
He has shown that he can perform to a relatively high standard in the Premier League in the past though, with Buendia scoring one goal and being on hand to provide eight assists for his Canaries team-mates in the 2019/20 campaign, as they were relegated from the top-flight.
But he’s seemingly going to return to the Premier League a much better player, with Buendia’s trickery on the ball causing defenders a number of problems when trying to contain him in a match.
If he can continue to build on these recent strong performances, then Arsenal could have some player on their hands, especially if he can justify the hefty price tag that Norwich are looking at selling him for this summer.
