Journalist Alan Nixon has rubbished reports that Bristol City are looking into Swindon Town manager Richie Wellens.

Bristol City have been without a manager since parting ways with Lee Johnson at the start of the month. Since then, several names have emerged as potential successors; Steven Gerrard and Chris Hughton seemingly the two lead candidates.

But the club's managerial search has narrowed down to Chris Hughton, with other linked names quietly dropping out of contention. One name that some fans have turned their attention to is the Swindon Town manager:

Wellens then is not a target of Bristol City's. Though the rumours might be just that, the appointment likely wouldn't go down well with fans.

City have spent well over the past few seasons and have done poorly to not manage a play-off finish in the eyes of many, with Johnson's departure becoming more imminent as the season dragged on.

Hughton would likely be most fans' preferred choice. Gerrard looks to be committing himself to the task at Rangers whilst Birmingham City are the club looking at all the best, available names at the moment.

Aitor Karanka, Robbie Fowler and Lee Bowyer being their front-runners.

The verdict

Wellens is a good, young manager who saw his side promoted into League One via the points-per-game system. But Bristol City fans wouldn't have warmed to the appointment of a manager who's best achievement to date is League Two promotion, with more names better suited to the job out there.
