After a poor start to the season, Sheffield Wednesday are starting to find form.

In the opening two games of the season, a loss and a defeat were resisted playing a 3-5-2 formation with Adam Reach, Joey Pelupessy and Barry Bannan the three central midfielders.

The formation was not working, and the personnel entrusted with performing in their respective roles were letting the club, and it’s supporters down.

It was a poor start, and manager Jos Luhukay rung the changes in their third game of the campaign against Millwall.

Opting, too, to alter the formation. And so an upturn in form began.

Luhukay moved Reach and reverted to a 4-2-3-1 formation, and this is where a partnership would blossom.

Pelupessy and Bannan were the two players behind an attacking quartet, and their luck turned.

Bannan scored the Championship Goal of the Month for August with his ferocious volley in their first win of the season over the Lions.

From there, their form has gone from strength to strength, and the partnership of Pelupessy and the Scotland international has been one of the catalysts for the upturn in fortunes.

The 25-year-old Dutch midfielder has been the more defensive minded of the pair in this good run of Sheffield Wednesday’s, allowing Bannan to join the attacking fleet and himself to dictate the tempo of the game and start off attacks.

That is shown in his pass success rate so far this season being a high 83.4 per cent after seven matches.

While he is starting the attacks, Bannan is finishing them off or supplying the ammunition in the final third.

Before the Millwall win, the 28-year-old failed to score or register an assist.

In the intervening games since and a change in the formation, Bannan has two goals and one assist in the four-game unbeaten run.

The two complement one another well and this is reaping the rewards for the side after the Luhukay masterstroke that is so far paying off in a big way.

And for that reason, we here at FLW, grade their chemistry and 77 per cent, only because of the lack of games they have played together.

If the pair can maintain their synergy, then they could be the anchors that delivery success to Hillsborough after an extended period without.
